ABOUT
John Reimers is a California native, retired construction supervisor, and self-taught artist. He has been living and working in southwest Colorado since 2008.
John's interest in op art and hard-edge geometric abstraction grew out of his career in architecture and construction. As he approached retirement, he began using construction scraps and job site leftovers to create abstract compositions influenced by artists like Alvin Loving and Victor Vasarely. Over time, he developed and refined his own process for creating cut and assembled tessellations that exist somewhere between painting and sculpture.
The works on this website are made from medium density fiberboard (MDF), a manufactured wood product that will not shrink or warp. MDF is also an excellent surface for paint. Each piece begins as a design sketched on paper before its individual pieces are cut and some are carved or textured. The modular components are painted with acrylic before the final composition is assembled, joined with construction biscuits, and sealed with a clear coat finish. A support is attached to the back of each piece for hanging.
